Recommendations to NGOs and educators derived from WCCI/IIPE workshop at UN CSW 55 on significance of science education to the peace education of the girl child
- Programs and practices in all level and realms of education should aim toward inclusion, in all areas of human identity; gender, ethnicity, religion, world regions, etc.
- Efforts must be made to overcome gender bias in science education;
- Gender bias and disparities in classroom practices should be overcome through intentional efforts to do so;
- Mentoring programs should be undertaken to encourage girls to take up science education to provide equal preparation for participation in security policy making as called for by Security Council Resolution 1325;
- Education should include preparation in the philosophy and practices of nonviolence for boys as well as girls;
- Achievements of women in the sciences should be featured in curricula;
- Educational practice should nurture reflective and critical thinking to prepare for responsible decision making in the use of science for the advancement of the human well-being of all;
- As the common general principles of global peace education, human rights should be introduced into the curricula as the fundamental guidelines for just societies toward which responsible global citizens should actively strive;
- Study of human rights principles and standards should include the human rights of women, the standards intended to eliminate violence against women and those such as 1325 intended to achieve equality for women in making the public and security policies that influence the possibilities for peace.
It is hoped that those associated with WCCI and IIPE will undertake efforts to advance these recommendations, and actively encourage other educators and NGOs to do so as well.
